Default What vitamins does meat have that i should replace in my diet? - 12-20-2008, 08:13 AM

I stop eating meat and am trying to make sure that I get the right vitamins. I already take a muiltivitamin and fish oil pills every day. Are there any other specific vitamins I should take?If so, what do they do?Thanks! ------

Hi BetsyLauren,

Someone already mentioned to be sure you get the proper protein balance. Not all vegetable proteins are 'complete' therefore be sure to mix them with dairy if possible. If you don't plan to use dairy either, then do some research to find out which beans to mix with what grains in order to make a 'complete' protein at each meal.

You should start with a good multi-vitamin. Not something off the shelf as they are usually ineffective. If you will be eating foods rich in iron, you should be okay. Dark grape juices are very effective.

Additionally, one of the things many vegetarians have trouble getting enough of is Vitamin B12. And since it's hard to absorb for even those who are not vegetarian, it behooves all of us to find, not only a product with the right ingredients, but also one that uses the right delivery system.
