Default Why is Hepititis B a standard childhood vaccine in some places, but not others? - 01-07-2009, 05:09 AM

I know that in some countries (eg. the US, France), it is usual for children to have a Hepititis B vaccine.I am due to study abroad later this year, and have been told I need to have the vaccine, but was just wondering, why are health professionals seemingly so reluctant to give this vaccine? I have already been quizzed 4 times on why I need to have it!

Most people are actually not aware of the dangers that hepatitis brings.Health professionals may be reluctant to give these shots because they're expensive, and is a hassle. I got my hepa shots last year, and it took me several months to complete my shots. :\

Although not a new vaccine, in the US only recently has it become a standard vaccine. Since transmission is only through blood exposure and sex, and only about 20% of infected people develop the disease, its may not be seen as a great threat. Unlike most the diseases of childhood vaccines, this disease is not highly contagious. Therefore some countries can not afford this vaccine and others just may not see it as necessary if you are at low risk. For example, i was vaccinated for hep B before it became standard because i was working at a hospital and my DR suggested i get the series of shots.Health professionals in other countries may still see it as unncessesary if not high risk, and therefore are reluctant to give the vaccine due to costs. Your explanations should be sufficient however.

I have no idea why you are having problems getting your Hep B vaccine.I would INSIST on receiving it.It's the same in Canada -- we have a school-based universal Hep B immunization program aimed at children 9-13 that was implemented in all provinces and territories in the 1990sAnd an infant universal Hep B vaccine program in some provinces and territories, in addition to the school-based pre-adolescent immunization program. The answer to your first qestion about why standard in some areas and not others.......most likely money. Money is always a factor.

This is because of unawareness there is a need to make the people aware of that.
