I want to know the different mental illnesses because I would like to write story about the insane, but I haven't got a clue where to start. LOL!

Research, but generally speaking, any state of mind that puts you at risk of harm to yourself or others. Schizophrenia, anxiety, paranoid delusions, delusions of grandeur....No always someone going on a rampage with a machete....I would advise you Against portraying any stereotyped conventional images. Try and do something realistic and balanced, thus rendering the content more convincing.

If by institution you mean like a mental hospital or psych ward--as the first poster wrote, anything that puts you at harm to yourself or others. So that could include psychotic breaks (with illnesses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder), personality disorders (most often extreme self injury), incapacitating depression and suicide attempts or sincere suicidal ideation.
