Default What can damage the liver apart from drinking too much alcohol? - 12-12-2008, 08:20 PM

A lot of people know that drinking too much alcohol can damage the liver. What else can damage the liver? Taking too much of certain medications, contracting hepatitis of all kinds...Anything else? Thanks.

Too much fat in the diet is really bad for the liver too.

I'm pretty sure too much of any kind of medication can damage the liver. The reason the liver gets damaged is that it is processing all those chemicals, and if it constantly gets bombarded by them, it can't keep up.There has been some research to suggest that drinking coffee (in moderation) can RESTORE the liver. So, drink coffee to counteract any sorts of medication you must take that destroy your liver. And avoid those medications if you can. I always try to take the minimum dosage needed to accomplish the job. Of course there are exceptions: if it is an antibiotic, it won't do any good unless you take the full dose, for the full time. Also if it is a psychiatric medication, a person should always regularly take the full dose. Really, any life-saving medication prescribed by a doctor should be followed completely. But over the counter stuff: that is what people generally take too much of.

I think diabetes affects the liver adversely after a while.

Being stabbed or shot in the liver will definitely cause damage to the organ.

Due to exposure to some anti-biotics, some sedative drugs, also fungal infection, that could be a part of immunosuppresive disease like AIDS, tuberculosis, any abscess in vicinity or in abdomen can damage liver. On a larger extent alcoholism is the best known cause for liver damage. Also, malaria causes damage in liver if remained untreated.
