A total cholesterol of 6.7 Mil/L is 259 mg/Dal. In general the goal for total cholesterol is less than 5.2 Mil/L or 200 mg/Dal. This is however an arbitrary goal. 'Normal' is determined by an assessment of a person's cardiovascular risk profile. Indeed the total cholesterol is of little interest to a physician. The physician should have measured a lipid profile which provides the VLDL, LDL, and HDL cholesterol. If you provide me with these lipid fractions and a bit of her health history I will try to provide a more thoughtful response. I wish you both the very best of health and in all things may God bless.

This cholesterol is elevated, but it would be helpful to know the breakdown of the cholesterol into HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) in order to determine the significance. Elevated cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other health issues. The risk is over years and this is unlikely to lead to any immediate problems. If you can provide the LDL, HDL and Triglycerides from his lipid panel, then I would be able to help you further. He should work with his doctor to determine the best treatment. Lifestyle changes including dietary changes and exercise can help lower the cholesterol to a certain degree. Medications may also be needed. Good luck.

When you have high cholesterol, you may develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually, these deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. Your heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the risk of a heart attack. Decreased blood flow to your brain can cause a stroke so she better see doctor ASAP!
