I am hving a hip replacement next week and I was wondering is it required to go to re-hab?

Not with hip replacements. Most people don't need rehab with those anymore, more for knees now. They may ask you to have a physical therapy consult, which can be done in the hospital, to see how you're doing after the surgery. But in my experience, unless you were having problems getting around before the surgery, most people don't go home with PT.

Some patients are dismissed from the hospital to a rehab center and some go directly home. I have had both hips replaced in separate surgeries and I was dismissed to go directly home. My"rehab"took place as an outpatient. FOr the first 2 weeks a PT and visiting nurse came to my home 2-3 times a week. After that I went to outpatient PT for about 5 weeks.So, in answer to your question, no it isn't necessarily required and the site of rehab can be at one's home (it's cheaper that way). Other factors may come into play when this decision is made. Besides insurance coverage, there are some people who live alone or have no social support system or have other comorbidities. Any of these may be a deciding factor on whether the patient goes to a rehab center or not.YOur surgery is imminent. Have you been told yet by your surgeon where you will be going upon dismissal from the hospital?
