Default my nana has kidney cancer that spread to the lung - survival chances? - 08-29-2010, 10:22 PM

hello..my Nana was diagnosed with renal cell kidney cancer about 6 months ago..the kidney got removed and it was also mentioned that there was a small dot on the lung but they didn't no what it was. since the operation to remove the kidney about 3 month ago she has felt 100% fit and healthy just as before she got the cancer. We all thought it was pretty much over with until today when she had a check up about the lung and several spots have been found (which was a sup rise since she is feeling so good). When i read on the Internet it would class it as stage 4 which is weird because she is fine and no doctors or any1 have mentioned that shes likely to die because on the Internet it says 80%+ people die within 5 years once it spreads to another organ.

would my Nana still be in this group? Or would she have a much better chance since she is so healthy at the moment and the main tumor on the kidney is already gone?

any help or thoughts are appreciated

thanks.

I'm very, very sorry. Yes it would seem that the kidney cancer has spread to the lung which, as you point out, would classify it as Stage IV renal cell carcinoma. This is considered "not curable" by the medical oncology community and it is almost certainly a terminal diagnosis. It makes no difference that the tumor on the kidney is gone, it has moved on to other major organs. Let me offer some advice please. Spend as much time as you can with her, and get to know her well. Celebrate her life, travel if you can, throw parties and make her know that you love her. Soon she will not feel like traveling or partying or even getting out of bed. Please, cherish every moment you have with her.

i had renal cancer ten years ago they told me that if i was to get secondaries it would most likely appear in my lung it didn't however.

Unfortunately it doesn't sound the best for your Nana just be great strength for her and it helps that she is fit and healthy.

best of wishes to you and your Nana

Those numbers are pretty accurate. Be aware though that there have been no less than 5 new drugs approved in kidney cancer in the past couple years, which have radically changed our approach and given patients new options. Some are tough, some pretty easy as far as treatments go, but at least there are options. While it would be appropriate to discuss survival at any first visit, even I succumb to the "it can wait a 'bit" feeling when the patient looks well, is obviously not currently dying, and has real prospects for living several years. Patients want hope, and while they need realism too, it can be a very delicate tightrope walk achieving both in one of the first few visits. The fact she is currently healthy bodes better for her. Have her see a medical oncologist and get the info on all the treatment options and let her make the best decision.
Blessings

Lung cancer is categorized into stages according to its spread. This helps the doctors to decide on appropriate treatments. Lung cancer treatments also depend on the type of cancer, age, health status and additional personal characteristics.

For non-small cell lung cancer, these stages are labeled from I to IV. The lower numbers indicate earlier stages where the cancer has spread less :

1. Stage I is when the tumor is found only in one lung and in no lymph nodes.

2. Stage II is when the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes surrounding the infected lung.

3. Stage III is when the cancer has spread to lymph nodes around the trachea, chest wall and diaphragm on the same side as the infected lung.

4. Stage IV is when the cancer has spread to lymph nodes on the other lung or in the neck.

5. Stage IV is when the cancer has spread throughout the rest of the body and other parts of the lungs.

Kidney cancer is really bad cancer for all and they spreading in our body very fast. Your nana had suffering to kidney cancer and they spreading to lung so that really bad news for your nana and they really tough to remove it so i thing survivor time is really low.
