Default How does using laxatives as a diet product work for people with eating disorders? - 12-21-2008, 03:28 AM

How do these people end up losing weight by using laxatives? I don't mean to be gross, but isn't the poo just food that has already been digested? Therefore, the fat and calories are already absorbed into the body? I don't understand why people would want to do this to themselves. I could not imagine having bowel cramps all day and needing to stay near a toilet at all times, just for the sake of losing a few pounds, when it probably does not work anyway.

you can lose a lot of water weight too. It comes right back on after you normalize your hydration.most laxatives work by drawing water into the intestines (making a flush) - once you re-hydrate after a couple of days you add the weight right back. Also, this can cause an electrolyte imbalance so its not smart/

You're right, the nutrients are already somewhat absorbed into the body. The weight loss that laxative-users see really is just the loss of water weight. So technically, no REAL weight reduction occurs.
