Getting effected with Cough is a natural reflex of the body and occurs in order to try and clear the airways of mucus (phlegm) or contaminants such as dust or smoke. A cough often arises with a viral infection such as the common cold, flu or with other conditions. There are two types:
Dry Cough (unproductive): A dry cough presents as a tickle in the back of the throat which doesn't has no mucus when coughing. A dry cough can occur due to the airways becoming damaged due to an infection, changes in temperature and cigarette smoking. It also occurs due to side effect of certain medicines. Also, a dry cough in children that is worse at night should be reported, as it may be a sign of asthma. It it lasts longer than 2 weeks consult your doctor. To reduce coughing use Cough suppressants as these work by acting on the area in the brain that causes a person to cough.
Chesty (productive cough): A chesty cough presents as a cough with mucus or phlegm. This excess phlegm is produced by the body to help fight infection or to remove contaminants from the lungs. Occurs with the common cold or flu and presents with symptoms such as headache, fever, nasal congestion and general aches and pains. Chesty cough treatments can be done with Expectorants, these work by diluting out the mucus, thereby making it thinner and easier to remove by coughing.
