Default Would I need to get braces if I have TMJ? - 01-09-2009, 03:35 AM

My mouth locks and makes clicking sounds sometimes. I get no pain, but my teeth are locked right now and it only opens a bit. I asked a question here yesterday and people said that I have TMJ. When I looked it up on the web it said that it's caused by crooked teeth and bad posture, etc. I'm 16, I've never had braces or retainers and my teeth are pretty straight except for a couple of the tops ones, which are pretty crooked. I also have a somewhat bad posture. Did my crooked teeth and bad posture cause TMJ? And if so will I need to get braces to correct it? All answers are apprciated.

It is generally a nervous condition. It will most likely be curbed somewhat by a retainer at night.

Usually a night guard takes care of TMJ. Don't take advice from people who aren't experts. Talk to your dentist. Bad posture has nothing to do with it.
