Polio compromises respiratory function in some patients, requiring the use of a mechanical ventilator. What happens at the cellular level to cause these breathing problems?

I would say it has to with with the serotonin levels in the brain, and or the direct degration of the mycolyne sheaths encapsulating the nerve endings in the brain, causing decreased sensitivity in their primary function. This in turn weakens the response time and volume of natural function levels to the muscles that control lung function. A short lived and limited result treatment without mechanical aid, would be steroid introduction at liver eating levels. Sad situation for many.
