I have a best friend in my hometown that's diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy since he was 10, and he can barely talk.

Since muscular dystrophy affects the control of both voluntary and involuntary muscle, it will effect speech. Our speech is based of the movement of air across the vocal chords, but the sound is regulated and shaped but muscles in the neck, mouth and face. To what degree to which it inhibits depends on how sever the case of muscular dystrophy.
