Multiple sclerosis is a disease in which the immune system supposedly attacks the myelin which is the protective coating on the nerves. This is just a theory. Medical science has no proof that that is what is happening. It is not a fatal disease. People with MS lead a normal or very near normal life span. There is no cure and nothing to operate on. The symptoms can include but are not limited to numbness and tingling in the extremities, fatigue, problems with balance, vision distortion and possible blindness, slurred speech, mood swings and cognitive problems. The disease can be very benign, relapsing/remitting (meaning it comes and goes) or progressive. In the benign form you would not even be able to detect that the person has a disease. They just might have tingling in their arms and legs or occasional problems with vision. In the relapsing/remitting form of the disease various symptoms come and go. Some people with relapsing remitting might get symptoms and then experience absolutely no problems for decades. Then again the disease may only disappear for a few months and then reappear with a vengeance. In the progressive form of the disease very little time elapses between symptoms and the person could possibly deteriorate to the point where they cannot speak, walk or live independently. So the severity of the disease as well as the symptoms can vary tremendously from person to person.

The majority of people with MS live long and reasonably normal lives. Some of us have to make a few adjustments, but our lives really aren't much different than someone without MS.As mentioned , MS isn't a fatal disease.
