Can a mental hospital hold you against your will? -

My best friend's sister got extremely intoxicated over the weekend and decided to break a CD in half and start digging into her wrist. She didnt go deep and was treated right away, but after treatment she was placed in a mental institution for about a week now. According to my friend, he says the her sister seems fine and did what she did out of stress.So my question is, can a mental hospital hold you against your will in the state of Illinois? ------
