Default night shift worker and my insomnia is changing my whole life, any ideas to help? just - 08-28-2009, 10:41 PM

I get done between1am and 2 am, but for the past three months can't get to sleep till nearly noon. And I ache everywhere. I have tons of energy between midnight and 10am...but, I need this energy between 3pm and 1am. I sit before a computer til I am finished work. Can computer light induce pain and insomnia? I can't make plans even for my days off, I am a zombie all day and evening.

Thanks. I've tried melatonin, doesn't help. I do lots of caffeine but only because I can't function at work without it.

I am late 40's, beginning menopause. Could this be it? For health reasons I can't do hormone replacement therapy. Some days, it feels like I'm having chemo..THAT tired, beyond tired.

Help?
I am posting this here since the women's health forum gets so little advice from older women. I hope to hear some words of wisdom from ladies who have been Thur the change, as I do suspect this is hormonal, at least in part.

This is what I take and it help with sleep. No Alcohol in take.

for sweating:
Evening PrimRose 2 grams in the morning noon and before bed 10:00 pm
Black Cohosh 40 mg twice a day morning and night
Maca 500 mg tablets 2 in the morning (Never at Night will cause insomnia

for sleep:
melatonin take two 5 mg at night
L-Theanine take two 100 mg at night
Valerian take two 200 mg at night
Hops take two 300 mg at night

This has been working for me and once I was over the worst of it I cut back on the Maca unless I really needed it.

Take Care and I hope the herbs that worked for me work for you too

if you really wanna sleep you have to develop a plan to unwind first ...nice hot bath or something and i will tell you this is the truth do not drink that coffee with a load of sugar in it .. when you cut out sugar like coffee soda pop sweets you will breeze Thur menopause with hardly any hot flashes..... for some reason sugar triggers hot flashes...drink warm milk turn off the computer and go to sleep.....good luck...

I'm a guy but I've worked a lot more nights than days. I've found that I can reset my sleep cycles by depriving myself of sleep as required. If I was in your situation I would not even try to sleep until my body feels the need but force myself to wake up at least an hour earlier than normal. For one or two nights I would feel tired as hell but that's what you need to go to sleep. It may not suit everyone but it works for me and of course you would need to consider the safety aspects of being tired on the job but it sounds like your already dealing with that. Good luck.

I used to work as a casino dealer in Vegas.
Some people swear they love the night shift and some other cannot do it.
I Land a very good dealing job but it was from 8pm to 4am.
The money was the best ever, well over $200. a night and I was also in my 40's and felt lucky to be hired in a brand new casino at my age.
I suffered exactly like you are now. I tried special relax music to help me fall asleep, meditation, yoga, talking to myself into sleeping, counting sheep. I even used blackout curtains and made myself a sleeping area in the walking closet where it was dark and quiet.
Finally I even tired a few shots of whiskey to make myself pass out.
Nothing worked. I know the feeling of your body feeling like it's dragging and depression and panic feelings of trying to sleep but not able to.
I got so insane that after 3 long horrible months i asked the casino manager to change my shift. Not a smart thing to do for a new employee but I was desperate. He said I had to work one year before I could change shifts since there was a huge waiting line for day shift.
I just quit that good paying job and took one that was about $60. a day less but I got day shift.
Sometimes money doesn't mean anything if your health is suffering.
Maybe you should try looking for another job.
I don't think it is hormonal, I worked with many people that hated the night shift but were in debt and couldn't quit.

Sorry, no better answer for you.
