Default Not knowing you have Lyme disease, Could a mother transmit the disease to her unborn - 04-11-2010, 02:57 AM

My daughter is 18 years old and told she has Lyme disease. Is it possible that I could be a carrier and gave it to her? She was a normal healthy baby 9lbs 7Oz's. Normal childhood. I breastfeed her for 6 weeks.

Lyme disease is usually caused from being bitten by a tick

No, it is carried by ticks. It isn't communicable any other way.

Actually, both previous posts are wrong. Lyme's disease is transmitted by a bacteria called a spirochete, and it can actually be carried across the placenta. So if it is present in the mother's bloodstream, it can be transmitted to the fetus before birth.

After birth though, the baby would have to acquire it through the usual fashion, that is via the aforementioned tick bite.
