Default Can I have lupus at 26? - 10-21-2008, 06:07 AM

I've been back and forth to doctors for a long time. I've had joint pain since I was 13. Acid reflux since I was 15. Various other problems since then. Lately, I've been dizzy and my lower back has been killing me for a while and my joints hurt randomly. I blacked out coming down the stairs and ended up breaking my toe.

I've gone back and forth to the doctors and I've gotten everything from torn cartilage to sclerotic to a herniated disk. The last doctor is testing for Lupus but so many people say I'm so young. Is it possible for so many things to go wrong or can I get Lupus at my age?

It is possible. On the second season of America's Next Top Model the girl Mercedes had lupus and I believe she was around your age or younger

My friend is 13 and she has lupus, so I doubt you're too young. I hope you're OK, though, and I hope you have a wonderful life.

yes. lupus is an auto-immune disease which can present itself at any age. However, this sounds more like rheumatoid arthritis (also autoimmune). PS, ever been in a forest? Ever find a deer tick on you? Could be Lyme disease (treatable!)

Lupus develops most often in women aged 14-45. It can develop at any age, however. Your doctor is wise to try to rule lupus out. Good luck.

The majority of our patients are females aged between 15 to 45 but we have known babies to have lupus. It can occur in younger people, especially teenage girls - this seems to be triggered by puberty and hormonal changes. The younger people are often misdiagnosed with 'growing pains' or juvenile arthritis.

So to answer your question the majority of patients are 15 to 45 but lupus can still manifest itself at ANY age even though its less common outside those age ranges.

It's always a good idea to have the test if you 'might' have lupus at least it eliminates it if nothing else.

Hope that helps.
