Default Is it okay to leave a virus or a lung infection untreated? - 12-27-2008, 02:17 AM

I'm afraid antibiotics will stop my birth control from working. I have what appears to either be a virus or a lung infection...I've had this four other times this year and was told by one doctor to take antibiotics while another doctor told me I didn't need to. Will it pass on it's own? Any tips?

A virus usually isn't treated with meds anymore, most docs just send you home and say it'll pass... Now a lung infection is different, that's bronchitis and you need antibiotics for it..

You need to be checked by a doctor. If the doctor says that its a simple viral infection on upper respiratory system, you don't need antibiotics. Because antibiotics don't work on viruses. But if you have more serious lung infection, like bronchitis or bronchopneumonia, you will need to take antibiotics, even if its caused by a virus. This is because most often viral bronchitis or bronchopneumonia, continues with a bacterial infection (its called super-infection). Because the inflammation and mucus that virus causes in the lungs, is ideal environment for bacterial infection. So first get diagnosed and then decide over therapy.

You should see a doctor if you have had 4 respiratory infections (viral or bacterial) this year.Tell him what birth control you use and he can work around it (or you can use a back up) this is not something to treat casually.

Treating a potential infection with antibiotics and decreasing the effectiveness of your birth control pills is much safer than not treating at all. The only thing you have to do is use an alternate form of birth control, condom, while you are taking antibiotics and for an additional 7-10 days after you finish them.
