Default What could ultrasound of the liver be looking for? - 12-21-2008, 06:40 PM

My husband's bloodwork recently showed 2 elevated liver functions. Now they want to do an ultrasound of his liver. He has not been diagnosed with diabetes. What could they be looking for? What liver problems can be detected through ultrasound?

they look for changes in density which would indicate things like tumors, or degradation of liver tissues.

They are done to determine the size, shape, and position of the liver. Also to evaluate jaundice and other problems of the liver, including liver masses, cirrhosis, fat deposits in the liver (called fatty liver), or abnormal liver function tests. Your husband's live is obviously having toruble and he should probably have blood work done and checked for hepititus.

I had the same thing. They look for fatty deposits on the liver, which is harmless and could cause elevated numbers. They are also looking for masses on the liver, possibly indicating cancer. It's just to cover their butts. Many times the numbers are elevated because of any medications you've taken, even OTC.
