Default HIV toilet seat transmission, is it possible? - 08-25-2009, 06:46 PM

My mother in law is coming to stay soon and she lives across the other side of the country so it takes her about 5 hours to get to us. I know that she stops on the way for a coffee and to go to the toilet, I am sure she must sit down on the toilet seat as she suffers with bad knees and there is no way she could hover over it, my concern is that toilet seats in service stations are used by hundreds of people each day, what if the person before her bleeds on the toilet seat and she doesn't notice and sits on it? I can't stand the thought of her sitting on something nasty and then coming and using my toilet seat. Please people am I over reacting or could she spread something nasty to my toilet?

No, I do not believe that it is possible under normal circumstances. From what I know about the HIV virus, it cannot live outside of the human body for long. Unless she sits on a large puddle of fresh blood on the seat that was recently left there (Not that she would! She would see it) she doesn't have anything to worry about. Even if that doubtful situation happens, it has to enter through a cut or sore on her body. So again, NO! This cannot happen. If you're concerned about hygiene, get her some travel toilet seat covers. You can get them at Walmart where you find the travel-sized stuff. That way, she can use public toilets with a bit less worry. With that being said, recent research has shown that it is actually SAFER to sit directly on the seat, with no cover. I am serious. Google it if you wish. Squatting can cause splashing, and the covers are also not great. Doorknobs and floors in the bathroom are much more unsanitary than the seats. They are not cleaned as often. Anyways, I hope this clears your doubts. Best wishes!

Definitely overreacted. You seem bat shit crazy, actually.

Anyways,no you can't HIV from your Mother-in-LAw because she uses a toilet. Once the blood has had contact with the air, the virus dies instantly. There is a zero percent chance that you will get HIV from your Mother-in-Law using a public restroom, and then using yours.

the HIV virus doesn't live that long outside the human body. unless like the other girl said, there was a TOOOON of blood, which she would notice and if she sat there on the blood IMMEDIATELY after! i mean IMMEDIATELY! it isn't too possible. otherwise people would be dying from HIV 100% more than they are now. the whole damn world would be dying! Lil.
