Default What are some effective high blood pressure medications? - 12-30-2008, 07:10 AM

I have untreated high blood pressure (usually around 144/99). I am taking my blood pressure each day to monitor the situation and establish what level I am at. I know I need to go on medication, but I want a medication that will have few side effects. I am particularly concerned about sexual side effects and I would still like to be able to have a couple drinks now and again.

Depending on if you have additional co-existing illnesses or conditions the following are first line agents that generally have few side effects, are inexpensive, and are not known to cause impotence.Hydrochlorithiazide (aka HCTZ) It is in the"diuretic"classification of medications, though I have never known a patient to report that it made them go to the bathroom more. Side effect profile for HCTZ is comparable to that of a sugar pill. Once on the medication, a blood test to confirm that your electrolytes are stable should be done.Lisinopril. It is in a class of medications called ACE inhibitors. Its primary side effect is a dry cough that develops in about 15% of people who use it. If the cough were to develop in you there are alternatives - though more expensive.Norvasc. This medication is in a class of medications called calcium channel blockers. It is probably not my first choice unless your blood pressure were substantially out of control - and yours is not - but remains an option and it is usually well tolerated especially at low dose, say 2.5mg.I hope this is helpful. Your primary care doctor is very well equipped to advise you on which medication to would be best for you - and I would take his/her advice. Good luck

You should discuss this with your doctor. I have hbp also. It took me 12 different types of meds and I was able to find one that works. Another thing to consider is changing diets and alot of exercise. The doctor will probably tell you to lay off alchol and tobacco(if you smoke.) good luck!!
