It depends on what type of unprotected sex. Hepatitis C is mainly a blood borne pathogen, so there has to be blood present when you are having sex. Anal sex, sex during menstruation, foisting, rough sex, piercing or cutting during sex can all produce blood making it more likely to pass the virus. Nationally, about 15% of hepatitis C cases were transmitted through sexual contact.
Finally, recent studies have shown that if you are infected with HIV you may be more susceptible to HCV co infection.
