Default Blisters from running -- What can I do to prevent foot problems? - 12-16-2008, 01:40 AM

Im training for a half-marathon -- I have good running shoes picked out along with the appropriate training socks -- however, the bottom of my foot is rubbing and is making my foot sore and is perhaps starting a blister. I'm looking for any problem-solving tips. Thanks!

Before you start, pull your socks up and put tape around your ankles. This stops your socks moving about as much and helps stop blisters forming. This is why you see footballers wearing ankle tape

Basically, blisters occur because of friction between your feet and your shoes. It can also occur between your toes when they rub against each other. To avoid this friction, you should wear shoes and socks that fit, but not too well. There should be a thumbs width of space between the toes and end of the toe box. This is because your feet will swell during the course of your 13.1 mile trek. Your socks should fit smoothly, with no extra fabric at the toes or heels.Moisture also contributes to the formation of blisters. Socks made of synthetic fibers wick moisture away from the skin. Cotton may be lighter, but it retains fluid, which may cause blisters. There are plenty of"blister-free"sock options out there at running stores, and they're all about the same to me.If you know where on your feet that you are prone to get blisters, you can also apply petroleum jelly beforehand to reduce friction. Personally, I like to use the Body Glide lubricant, but Vaseline is just as good.Good luck on your race!

make sure your shoes aren't too small, even if they feel ok while just standing in them

If the shoes fit correctly and you are wearing good socks, it may be that your skin is not used to the mileage. I have used women's knee high hose which gives much better resistance to blisters than cotton socks. You can wear them without regular socks or under the socks next to your skin. After your feet are toughened up you should not need anything.

As others have already said, ensuring correct shoe and sock choices are the first step.Sometimes conditions will cause blisters such as moisture or running in the rain. You can always consider products like Body Glide and Vaseline to lubricate the areas where the blisters are occurring. Running stores even sell special blister treatment kits that provide a bandage to protect the damaged area.

Agreed. If you feel your sock moving, or your foot moving in your shoe stop to adjust and think about buying smaller shoes.
