Default Besides medicine, what are some suggestions with dealing with ADD? - 12-27-2008, 01:21 PM

Not only me, but my whole family has ADD (attention defecit disorder). My mom, my dad and I all have severe ADD and my little brother who is 10 has severe ADHD (attention defecit hyperactive disorder). Everyone in my family is extremely messy and our house is a wreck. But i can't live or think clearly unless i'm in a clear space. My room is the only place i can go, but the messy house has put so much stress on all of us. It has build up to the point where we look at it and cry and we don't know where to start. What are some things that i can do to take control of my family without trying be the parent of my little brother or disrespect my parents? What are some suggestions of making cleaning fun so i can get my family and me motivated? What are some suggestions of relaxing things i can have my family (especially my brother) do to calm down? Thanx a lot everyone.

My grandson has ADD and you can out grow it in some cases if your house is a wreck then get your family to clean it up that is not to much work,And as far as your little brother goes that does'nt have anything to do with Add.

two cups of caffeinated coffee in the morning can really help get add in check. the caffeine works as a stimulant but in people who have ADD stimulants are calming...Ritalin is a stimulant as well

Is it possible to pay someone to come by once a week to clean the house? You look at all the mess with frustration and don't know where to start, maybe you start here, or no, it's better to clear the books first, or no, look at that ceiling, it's got so much cobwebs and spend 2 hours cleaning the ceiling, your back and arms ache. You've put in a lot of effort but the whole place looks like crap and you get tired and frustrated and say screw this and wander off somewhere else.Yes, I have ADD. I'm still trying to deal with the mess. My psychologist tells me sometimes it's not worth all the effort beating yourself up about why you can't clean the house. Sometimes you just have to bring someone in, cause at least the house will be clean. I plan to hire someone when I have a house, if not every week I probably won't have the money, but once a month even.Getting someone in will help motivate you as you look at the clean house and feel good. You've to set schedules and set chores for everyone. One thing about ADDers is that we are easily overwhelmed, especially if we are not sure what to do. If you know exactly what to do, it helps to keep on track.Turn it into a game. Start little by little. Get everyone to start in one room. Set a timer so you don't get sidetracked by unimportant things like classifying your music for 2 hours. For example, you set a timer and everyone has to pick up as much newspaper as they can in 5 minutes. I've found I do things better if I've someone with me.It doesn't all have to be done in one day. Don't try to do everything all at once. And always take a deep breath.

This is an old thread - have you resolved any of your issues? Is your house looking any cleaner and are you feeling like you have more control?

If I were you, I would set aside a weekend or something to do a major cleanup. I think cleaning is always better with music and conversation. Hopefully that's not too obvious . . . . I just want to know how you are doing now.
