Default How do I, as a disabled pastor, start a ministry for those with disabilities? - 12-27-2008, 06:29 PM

I have been led to start a ministry in Philadelphia, PA whose primary purpose is to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those with physical and developmental challenges. I myself have a mild case of Cerebral Palsy. I have been and still am a pastor, and I have been a history teacher. I am a husband, father, and grandfather. My aim is to develop programs that will allow those with disabilities to discover that there are more letters in ability then there are in dis. What I need to know is, How do I go about making this mission a reality? I need an accessible building, an adaptable van, braille printer, TTY machines, and computers that can be adapted to meet the special needs of those who will be using them.

Contact other pastors and let them know what you are doing. They might know people with disabilities who are reticinent about heading out and who might be more readily available for church if they knew someone who truly understood them would be there for them. Also, most cities have a religious council board that is made up of various religions. Their meetings are usually open to the public; you can go and speak with them.As for the building and equipment, I can't help you with that one. You may need to start in your livingroom. You can probably apply with various agencies. Is there a national agency for the blind? They should have a list of grants that are available.

hi, I have a close friend who has a very similar calling to you in working with those who are'disabled'to bring healing in all areas and facets of their life. She is looking to begin a respite centre for those whom she is called to care for... apparently these places of healing and respite are all the go in the UK.Maybe it might be an idea to get in touch with the carers association in the UK and find out about their programs, and get linked in with the health authorities in your state, approaching the government and local churches and hospitals with your idea and finding out how they can help and support you, word of mouth to promote your service.... they are just some starting ideas...You will need to get a solid team of people around you... those who are committed to helping physically - but more importantly you need to surround yourself with those who will commit to praying for you and your vision and for it to be fruitful.. and then you just need to remain patient on the Lord (Isaiah 40:31).I would truly be interested to know how you go - I think it is totally awesome that you are following after the burden and call that has been placed on your heart. Email me sometime :-)-Duckie
