Default Do you think there is a link between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and depression? - 01-04-2009, 01:59 PM

I had chronic tiredness, which was lifted by Citalopram. Although a side effect of this medication is lethargy - but it nothing in comparison to not having the medication. Anyone have similar thoughts or ideas, or having a different perspective?I am not diagnosed with CFS, but a friend is and she is on the same medication. I don't get tired as much now, and have more motivation to get of that couch.....or shall I say, computer seat!

Try getting off that couch once in a while and doing some exercise.

Both are sets of symptoms rather than diseases. Some people have only one, some have both and some alternate between the two. Citalopram helps manage the symptoms. To find a cure, you need to address the cause.

I do think they are linked. I have fibromyalgia, and when it flares up and I'm in so much pain, its incredibly depressing. The longer you go without being able to function properly, the more depressed you get. If you do too much and then cause pain, its depressing.I think it's a vicious cycle that is very difficult to get out of. Its hard to find the right combination of medication that works, and a good combination of physical activity that will help heal pain in your body.I also think that unless someone has experienced a chronic pain condition - that it's very difficult for them to understand it.

Yes, depression is a symptom of CFS. Are you diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue? Or just feeling tired? In my humble opinion, Chronic Fatigue is just a bodily version of depression. My dad had it when I was a kid and I knew that it was his body giving in from emotions that were too hard for him to bear. If Celexa (citalopram) lifts it, I'm glad - that is great news!
