Hiya Vicky, this is definitely a male only problem, as you girls don't have a prostate gland.A lot depends on how the surgery is carried out. The only way I have any real knowledge of is the Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate (T.U.R.P.)As suggested the surgery is carried out through the Urethra, under a general anaesthetic, and afterwards the patient has a catheter fitted. This allows the hospital staff to monitor the output of urine, and what it contains, and the levels. (Blood, Ketones, Proteins etc) which are recorded on a fluids chart. Generally it takes 3 to 4 days for the urine to stop showing traces of blood, so the patient can be discharged from hospital. After that, a lot depends on the patient's age, physical condition etc as to how soon he can return to work, but generally, Prostate Cancer is more regarded as an more mature (older) person's disease.I hope this helps.Mike t.
