While cigarette smoking is an undisputed cause of lung cancer, not all cases of lung cancer occur in smokers or former smokers. Each year, over 170,000 Americans develop lung cancer, and approximately ten per cent of lung cancers, or 17,000 cases, occur in non-smokers. Although not every non-smoker suffering from lung cancer will have an identifiable risk factor for development of the disease, a number of conditions and circumstances have been identified that will increase a non-smoker's chance of developing lung cancer.

It can be given to you by second hand smoking, which is when you inhale the exhale of someone Else's cigarette. It's more likely if you are close to someone who is smoking a lot.

There have been cases when entertainers have developed lung cancer, and have never smoked in their lives, IE, Roy Castle! That was caused by secondary smoke in the days when people were allowed to smoke anywhere! Doctors express concern at parent smoking in the presence of their children, it is undisputed that what we inhale is relevant to our lungs healthiness! I sometimes feel sorry for smoker having to go outside to smoke, but I have to admit, it is heaven to go to the cinema, and restaurants etc, without having the smell of smoke to ruin everything!

No one knows what causes cancer, so believe smoking is the only cause does not make sense.

Most lung cancer is linked to smoking, but not all. After smoking, the second most common cause of lung cancer is speculated to be radon in the environment. Radon is a radioactive gas that is naturally present and comes from certain types of rocks, but it's much more prevalent in some regions than in others. Other cases of lung cancer are of unknown cause, and even the radon link is hard to prove. Asbestos exposure is thought to be a cause of lung cancer, but the link seems to be strongest mainly in people who are exposed to asbestos AND are smokers.

Fortunately, if you're not a smoker, it's very unlikely that you'll ever get lung cancer. If you're a lifetime smoker, though, you have about a 1 in 6 chance of dying of lung cancer.

Cigarette smoking is NOT an "undisputed cause of lung cancer." Some people are so gullible and will believe anything the government and media tells them (because they have always been so right). Smoking is only a contributing factor to disease; if you live a healthy life style you'll live a healthy and long life whether you smoke or not. This is something those biased and Prue-determined studies done on smoking so UN-scientifically will never tell you. And even if you do die of smoking related causes, it you'll be older anyhow. 1% of non-smokers get lung cancer while 8% of smokers do, the ones that overdo it and smoke 2 or 3 packs a day. Just like anything, smoking in moderation is harmless just like drinking.

As to your question, non-smokers get lung cancer from years of exposure to chemicals or asbestos. Fumes from vehicles are 1000 times worse than cigarette smoke but no one ever complains about that.
