Well what I learned in college biology 101 is, the heat from the burning cigarette burns the protective cilia that's all in your lungs. When that's gone, the tar and other impurities imbued in your tissue and fester. Also it makes your bronchi brittle and if they aren't moist and flexible, they can't hold oxygen. So that goes on for years and eventually, you may end up with emphysema, lung cancer, COPD....
Look at the rock hard black stuff in the bottom of an unwashed ashtray...that's what's in your lungs
