Default can i get lung cancer from second hand smoke? - 11-16-2009, 10:54 PM

my dad smokes EVERY SINGLE DAY. and no matter what i do i at least smell it once a day. either in the morning or at night. in the morning i wake up and open the door and BAM. all the smoke spreads to my room. and unless i wanna get the bathroom i have to go through all that smoke. then when he comes home from work, he smokes EVEN MORE. while doing Haw, my mom sometimes randomly opens the door and BAM more smoke. and it takes at least 10 minutes for the smell to go away, even if the door was open for only a second. i told my dad 10938401983021 times to stop smoking but he wont do it.

and i have noticed this passed year that i have a hard time breathing. when i run, i am always the slowest because i run out of breath fast before everyone else. i can run fast, until i run out of breath. and when i try holding my breath underwater, i cant really exceed passed 20. usually just 10 and i cant take it. I'm 15 turning 16 soon. so yeah can i get cancer from second hand smoking?

Yes, unfortunately as other have said, you can get lung cancer from second-hand smoke. Since your dad isn't likely to quit smoking anytime soon, perhaps you could talk your parents into buying some air purifiers for the house and for your bedroom. Air purifiers come in all shapes and sizes so you have quite a choice. They are sold at places like Wal-mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. You can find them on line, too. Air purifiers will clean the air of smoke, odors, allergens, and such, so you have cleaner air to breathe. You can also get a couple of plants and put them in your room. Plants help clean the air, too. I'm not sure how good they are for odors, though.

Some case studies say you can't get cancer from second hand smoke, some say you can. It still has yet to be pr oven and it never will be because the chances of getting cancer from second hand smoke are so rare that solidity will never be obtained. The EPA claims they could mark second hand smoke as a carcinogen but they also had their evidence thrown out by a federal judge for "cherry-picking" their data. Even after cherry-picking they still had 6 case studies that actually showed exposure to second hand smoke reduced lung cancer vs 26 which claimed a link to lung cancer, however the link on the 26 studies was so small they couldn't be taken seriously by the scientific world as "significant". The BMJ also had studies that suggested exposure to second hand smoke reduced chances of lung cancer.

I've studied "can I get lung cancer from second hand smoke" for quite a while, and found that although there a million smoking ban campaigns that claims it does, the science done on the effects are just not conclusive one way or the other. I guess that makes it okay to lie to everyone to pass legislature. Anyways, facts aside. More cases than not hinted that lung cancer risk increases by a tiny percentage but not significantly. To me that makes since because if the direct smoking causes cancer, there must be an its bits link to second hand smoke and cancer. So going with the EPA report, which is considered exaggerated, the chance that you will catch lung cancer from your dads smoke indoors is 1 in 80,000. To me that's no need to cause a fuss over, radon will cause your lung cancer before second hand smoke will. That is stated also by the EPA. Consumer Reports had this to say on the EPA studies.

?The studies showed that for any given nonsmoker, the lifetime risk of getting lung cancer remains small: 4 to 5 in 1000 ordinarily, and 6 to 7 in 1000 if he or she has been living with a smoking spouse.?
