Default Can you survive lung, liver, AND bone cancer? - 02-17-2009, 04:55 PM

Well, I'm asking for my best friend's mom. my best friend really only has me and her mom and it would kill her if her mom died. can her mom make it through?
it started out as brain cancer, but moved to lungs, then the liver, then bones. threes no more brain cancer.
all i know is her mom is 51.

I don't see how. Personally I only knew one person, a neighbor, with liver cancer and she died w/i 6 months. She was my son's friend's mother.
Don't jump to conclusions though as everyone is different and you don't know how far along, the stage, of cancer she in.
It will depend on how strong she is now, if she takes chemo, if she even can with so many different types, it could wear her down as it would anyway.

I am so sorry. My dad died of cancer and its very difficult to see a parent or a friend's parent go through this.
Good luck to all of you. God bless.

What is the specific type of cancer . . it is extremely unusual for brain cancer to metastasize to the lungs, liver and bones.

In either case survival depends on a variety of factors . . none of which you share . . it depends on specific location of each tumor, tumor type, grade of disease, age, overall health of patient, patient response to first line treatment, the talent of her oncology team, research being done with her type of cancer, etc . . survival isn't just one thing . . each patient is an individual and with cancer one patient may respond to treatment while another patient does not . . however, whenever a patient is dealing with metastatic disease means the battle has spread out across the body. It is difficult for medicine to treat the body effectively in all those different locations. By the time treatment such as surgery or radiation is done on the lung than growth occurs in the bone, if they focus on the bone than they run the risk of further disease in the lung and liver or elsewhere. It is complicated because cancer that is so far spread out cannot be treated all at once except by chemotherapy . . and chemo at this point may only slow the progression of disease and not destroy it.

So because your friends mom is a unique individual she may be able to survive by slowing down the progression of the disease . . and this would give her precious time and hopes that medical science can come up with a solution and she will live long enough for them to help her. If treatment does not stop disease progression than eventually the cancer will claim her life.

If it started as brain cancer then it is still brain cancer, it has just metastasized to other places.

So it is actually metastatic brain cancer of the lungs, liver and bones.

Metastatic cancer in any one of these locations is difficult to fight.

The treating oncologist is in the best position to answer how a particular patient is responding to treatment. Your friend should be accompanying her mother to appointments to get more information.

I certainly hope so. Me, Melanoma in the neck and then metathesized to esophagus moved to the lungs and evolved to the brain. Last scan, showed new tumors in the liver and small intestine.

Well, No one can predict this.

But in all honesty, this is a quite aggressive/invasive cancer. And it has spread to the bone marrow and lungs, two complicated areas to fight cancer. Also this depends on staging. It doesn't exactly sound the best though.

My mom has been battling cancer for 12 years so it IS possible. It started in her breast and spread to her lungs, bones, breast again, and now liver. I think it's also in her colon too but won't find out for a while, she tens to hide stuff. Anyways...every person and every cancer is different so I can't magically make her mom live forever but never give up hope. We haven't yet!
