Default Inosotol. New lung cancer preventing drug???? This is what I heard on the Today show. - 06-24-2008, 04:13 PM

OK, I watch the Today Show every day. I love it. Only a few minutes ago, they had a report on a natural drug called "Inostital" This can be found in the local health food stores. The one thing is, this is suppose to reverse the lung cancer gene. NO.this doesn't mean you can continue to smoke. Dr. Nancy Sneiderman, who is the shoe's medical ad visor commented on this. This Drug is being tested by the American Cancer institute on those who quit. The gene actually reversed itself from the potential of getting cancer. Now, I'm skeptical, It takes a lot to make me a believer in these things. Especially plant based pills found in the health food stores. Anyone that's read some of my answers on "natural cures" know how I feel. I've been fooled before. Let me add, Nancy did say, this drug will not have an effect on those who continue to smoke. No, it doesn't work like that. You have to quit. Ha ha. I just want some feedback. Am I being to skeptical? Do you believe this drug?. Those who already buy this will be out of luck if it's approved by FDA because you know what that means...prescription and a whole lot of money to spend. I don't know. By the way, the test were done on only 10 people and out of those 10. less than half had positive results. I'm a former smoker. Maybe I should go the health food store and stock up before the price shy rockets and you know that's going to happen. I've never taken them before. I really need some incite from knowledgeable people. Any takers? Oh, Dr Nancy did say, this drug will NOT help those with COPD, Emphesema or any other lung disease caused by smoking or anything else. Thanks for your answers, I hope.
Paul, I know all drugs come from nature. I'm not that stupid. (forgive me) the first answer, No, I think you are way out of line. That's just not true.

I doubt it. They use it to cut cocaine. I do know that.

Inositol has been used as an adulterant (or cutting agent) in many illegal drugs, such as cocaine, methamphetamine, and sometimes heroin.[23] This use is presumably connected with the substance's solubility and near-lack of taste (which is easily hidden by the narcotic).

Like a lot of things in natural products, effects on the chemical pathway of PI3K may lead to effective ways of reducing cancer risk. This pathway is dealing with the expression of phosphates-inositol-3 kines (PI3K) p110 and p85 subunits. A kines is an enzyme that breaks something down. So phosphates-inositol-3 is the target. Giving someone a similar molecule like Mayo instill will signal cells which encounter it to start making the enzyme I mentioned in an attempt to break it down. Curcumin also has a similar effect. I cannot say with any confidence that taking instill supplements will definitely reduce your cancer risk, but I also can say with any confidence that it is a waste of your time and money. So do it if you like and want to spend your money on your own personal research.
The questions remain of how much can be taken by mouth to be effective in sufficiently activating this pathway so that the effect is real, whether the effect of activation will help over a long time, what other pathways can be involved to make the effect mean something, and whether the reduction in this particular molecule being present in the airways is a cause of reduction of cancer risk or a sign that it is occurring.
In the body, there are three places where there are increased levels of an inflammatory molecule called Prostaglandin E2. They are epithelial fluid in the lungs, spinal fluid, and (in men) the prostate. This may be another target for you to work on as a former smoker seeking to reduce cancer risk. The precursor for this molecule is the well known arachnoidICCcid (AA). Since dietary sources of Omega 6 lipids allow the body to make AA, consider reducing your risk by reducing intake of Omega 6 fats, coming from five major plant oils and meat. Corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, and a couple of others I can't recall are high in it. A dietary increase in Omega 3 lipids will help balance this.
No proof offered here, but just the general tendency of cancer initiation at sites of inflammation and old injuries.
But good for you that you quit smoking. Thanks for giving us a great example. Your questions are always interesting.
