My father was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of 52. He was a very muscular man (about 5' 11" and 210 lbs). The doctors told him since his cancer had spread, he could prolong his life by going through chemo, but he would eventually die from it. They gave him a prognosis of 6 months to a year. He lived for almost 2 years, but died at 125lbs. and miserable. He lived twice as long as the doctors expected, but his quality of life was horrible. He was so weak from the heavy doses of chemo that he eventually needed help going to the bathroom, bathing, and was on oxygen for the last year of his life. He said he wished he would have never taken any chemo. It was tough to watch him slowly die. I wish you all the best and make sure you make the most of the time you have with your mother. Make sure you tell her everything you ever wanted to tell her.
