Default Anyone know anything about sticky platelets? - 01-05-2009, 01:31 PM

My 9-month old went today for her check-up and her CBC (complete blood count) came back with'sticky platelets'. The doctor said she might be just about to come down with something or it could have just been difficult to draw the blood...or she could have a rare bone marrow disorder. Of course I am crazy for worrying but I still do. She is supposed to go back in 2 weeks for a repeat CBC. Nothing is ever straightforward with her! Anyone know anything about this?

I believe"sticky platelets"causes the platelets in the blood to stick together, which may cause blood clots.

The only"sticky blood"disorder I am familiar with is"Anti-Phospho-Lipid Syndrome. My sister has it. She has to take a blood thinner for the rest of her life. It is very rare; in fact it is called an"orphan"disease because so little is done to find a cure. Try to calm down and don't get upset unless there is something to get upset about.

Antiphospholipid syndrome is rare, and mothers of these babies usually have a hard time to conceive. Although this is a possibility, I don't think your baby has this syndrome."Sticky platelet"being a description is vague. Maybe what your baby has is thrombocytosis or in ordinary terms,"many platelets". If you have too much platelets, they'll stick together.Thrombocytosis has many causes. But first, I want you to remember if your baby was crying and squirming while they're getting blood. This is one factor for the increased"sticky"platelets. Otherwise if she isn't sick with cold or flu, that would explain it.It would be safe to have the CBC repeated after 2 weeks. A rare bone marrow disease won't just give you sticky platelets. The other blood components will be affected too.
