Default Could my 5 yo have lukemia or a blood disorder? - 12-26-2008, 03:11 PM

For the past 6 months I have taken my daughter to the clinic at least twice a month because of recurring infections from brohnchitis, strept throat&ear infections. She has taken everything from Amoxicillin to Augmentin. I am quite concerned because for the first time her doctor ordered a blood exam, she says that her white blood cells is slightly elevated and probably because she is on antibiotics, but everything else looks normal? It doesn't seem all that normal to me because she is getting ill almost every week if not every other&we can't seem to figure out what could be the problem. I have been trying to get some kind of help by internet to try and figure out what could be wrong with my baby before its too late. It seems like my child has taken every kind of antibiotic there is for whatever she may have and her body is not responding to any of them. I am thinking about getting a second opinion or maybe going to a childrens hospital anywhere in the U.S. Pls help in any way.

i would check for immune deficiencies rather than blood abnormalities. if she's had previous blood work, and that didn't concern the doctor, i would doubt it would be leukemia. good luck, i hope everything works out for you

my first question is do you smoke? If so it could be the cause of the ear nose and throat problems she is having. If there is no one smoking around her, then perhaps she has allergies and that mimics some of these symptoms as well.just in case i would take her in to another doctor and get a second opiniongood luck to you and her

By all means get a second opinion but also get her immune system healthy. Be sure she is taking a multivitamin that is well absorbed by the body and is one that has lots of antidoxidants in it to help boost her immune system. You may want to consider a separate antioxidant supplement along with the mulitvitamin. Be sure she gets lots of fresh fruits and veggies and use an air purifier in your home and one in her bedroom. Get rid of ALL of your toxic cleaning products that you buy in the grocery store as most are registered pesticides. Switch to all natural cleaning and laundry products as the store brands can be making her sick too. Once you have the new ones take the old products to your nearest toxic waste place for disposal as it is against the law to put them out in your trash as these are considered hazardous waste. Have someone take your daughter for the day and clean your entire house with the new products including shampooing all carpets and furniture with the new products and wash all clothingand bedding in the non toxic laundry products. Yes this is a lot of work but the toxic products you now use could be what is making her sick.

Taking too many antibiotics can lower the body's ability to fight off infection. If her WBC's are elevated ,its due to infection. If she is constantly having strep throat and ear infections take her to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. Are they doing cultures and tests to rule out the specific bacteria that is causing the illness? I would take her to a specialist or a different pediatrician.

I think its unlikely that your child has an underlying problem causing her infections. It sounds as though none have been severe enough to require hospitalisation, so they are probably the resullt of catching the bugs that always seem to follow five year olds around. The fact that your physician was not too concerned about her blood test should reassure you.

Get a second opinion. Get a third opinion. Get as many opinions as it takes until you feel that some has a handle on what is going on. Forget the internet - see the docs.Leukemia is not likely simply based on repeated infections. Can't rule anything out until she's tested, but probably not something to worry about yet.She might need drains in her ears, might have tonsils that need to come out (they do it in extreme cases) or might, though less likely, have some kind of pulmonary issue.Remember one thing: the doctors work for you. Treat them as such. Don't stop until you are satisfied.

Has she just started school, new daycare, anything like that? Have you started a new job? Her body could just be responding to new germs from being introduced to a new group of people. There are some kids that just get alot of illnesses for whatever reason. If you are looking for another doctor to see I would find a pediatric allergist. Let them do some testing and see if she is just allergic to several things. This doesn't seem like anything scary, like cancer. 2 of my 3 kids were VERY ear infection prone as infants and toddlers. 2 or 3 antibiotics a month until we had tubes put in.
