Default I have a blood clotting disorder, factor 2. Is it safe to have a baby? - 12-22-2008, 01:07 AM

I recently had a 2nd miscarriage and after a torture of blood work my dr. told me that i have an inherited blood clotting disorder, factor 2. she said i probably inherited it from my mother, who died of a heart attack at the age of 29. this scares me completely to death and all the dr. offers is, why do u keep thinkin ur goina bleed to death if u get pregnant, call me when u get pregnat again. duh? am i over reactin or what? she tells me that if i do get pregnant again i will have to inject blood thinner into my stomach every day of my pregnancy which will probably not go to full term just as a precaution. has anyone else had a sucessful pregnancy with this type of blood disorder and what r my chances of not surviving this disorder if i get pregnant? this is so stressful to grasp to say the least, the dr. offers no further info. on the subject. any responses r greatly appreciated.

I would find another doctor and talk to them about it.

See a fertility specialist or your gyno and seek help!

You said if you get pregnant"again"you will have to have treatment... where you pregnant before? If you inherited this condition, then you had it with the first pregnancy and if everything went fine then, it should go fine now. Also, if you inherited it, BOTH parents have to be carriers in order for you to get it, that's why factor II is so rare.If this condition occurred later in life and is not inherited, then you may or may not have to be treated during pregnancy, and most pregnancies are successful. You will be considered high-risk, only because they will have to monitor you and the baby, not necessarily because something will go wrong. What I strongly suggest is that you have a consultation with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist (high risk pregnancy specialist) and go over your case. I think what he/she will have to say about it will ease your mind about pregnancy, also IF you need treatment, a specialist will know more about that than your regular doctor or GYN.Good luck.

Hi,I have a blood clotting disorder, they do not know why or what one. I test neg to every test they come up with. But I have been dead 5 times from it, pulmonary embolism got me. Strating in 1991, just prior to my 21st. Isn't it a bummer not being able to drink on your birthday.Anyway yes you can have"normal"kids. I am due in Nov with #5. Yes they like for you to take anti-coagulants and watch you closely through out. Yes they induce you at about 37 weeks, so that they have all the right people around just in case. But I have had all of mine without much intervention. Plus with induction you get to pick the day you deliver. Although one of mine came early just to spite the Doc's.The injections are a heprin as the tablet forms can cause big problems. I am terrified of needles and can not give the injections. So we compromise and I am on low dose asprin. It is not ideal but better than nothing at all.Because you are watched so closely they have a plan in place well before delivery. I have a Doc who specializes in high risk pregs. I am 24 weeks now but my delivery plan is already in place. So part of the care if getting the right Doc to look after you.Things they forget to mention;Coudamin (warfrin), the tablet form of anit-coagulants can cause birth defects both physical and neurological, so please plan ahead. I didn't but got away with it, more ass than class. That all anti-ocagulants strip the calcium out of your body, so please take extra, all of the time. You are high risk preg, even if both you and bub are healthy and will be watched very very closely, not a bad thing realy but can get on your nerves.I wish you all of the luck in the world. I can asure you that it is worth the risks. Check out the web pages I have listed. The mommyguide is very good site. Don't let the infomation and Doctors scare you. It can be done, I've done it 4 times already.

I was diagnosed with Antithrombin 3 deficiency when i was three months pregnant. It was found because i lost my sight in my left eye for about 20 min. Actually getting pregnant was a good thing for me because it discovered that i had this disorder which probably would not have been discovered until something drastic had happened to me. I did have to inject heparin into my stomach every day. The reason for this is because you women are more prone to clott when they are pregnant and since you have this disorder you are even at more of a risk. Yes it was terribly difficult but i got thru it and I even had a c section. Everything went fine. I did not have to deliver early but they thought that c section was my best bet. I saw a high risk doctor along with my normal ob/gyn. My son is now one years old and has no sign of this disorder. After I gave birth I had to see a hematologist. Obviously when i got pregnant again i had to go back on the blood thinners. As long as you follow doctors orders and you have greatdoctors that all work together to make sure you have a healthy safe pregnancy you will be fine. One thing I would offer to you is to make sure you do not ever go on any birth control pills or patches. They themselves can cause clotting on people that do not have this disorder never the less someone that is more prone to clotting. Please don't let this scare you away from having a child. If you are scared and feel your doctors are not giving you the information that they should give you then you need to change your doctors. You need to be comfortable with your doctors. I wish all the luck to you.

I recently found out that I have the same blood clotting disorder as you - Factor 2 Prothrombin - very rare! I would highly recommend finding a good primary care physician who will help you manage all of the complications with this disorder, a good hematologist, and a good high-risk OB-Gyn if you do decide to try to get pregnant again. Are you currently taking coumadin? If so, you will probably be told to discontinue this once you begin trying to conceive as coumadin is linked to birth defects. Unfortunately, you will most likely have to inject Lovenox shots in your stomach daily - ouch - they really sting!! Fortunately for you, the doctors have found this blood disorder and can help prevent another miscarriage. I haven't had kids yet, but have been told I should be fine with both pregnancy and birth. My biggest concern is possibly passing the disorder on to my baby, as the mutation is from a dominant genetic trait.
