Relax! Your friend has a clotting factor deficiency (this in itself is not life threatening and he shouldn't worry), he will most likely be under the care of a Consultant Haematologist).Should the unfortunate time arise when he needs a blood transfusion, he will be able to receive blood units without a problem. All that the Medical Scientist (the guys that test and provide the blood for patients in hospitals) will need is a sample of your friends blood, they will do tests to determine his blood group and a test to check to see if he has any antibodies (you hope he has no antibodies, but dont worry if he has). His Factor V deficiency does not come into the equation at all! He will then be given the same blood group that he is, or group O as that is the universal donor blood (anyone can have group O blood). If your friend has a positive antibody then a further test has to be done to identify what antibody it is. Once this is done blood that doesn't contain the Antigen for that antibody is given to your friend, Simple!Note - the above is carried out for every single person that needs a blood transfusion, as i said his Factor V deficiency does not affect him receiving blood at all!
