Default Need the name of a disorder where your allergic to any blood other than your own? - 12-20-2008, 01:37 AM

I remember reading a book once, and one of the characters had a rare blood disorder. The long and short of it was that she was severely allergic to anyone else's blood, except for her half-sister's (don't ask me how that's possible, I don't know!). Basically, I'm asking what the name of the disorder is. I've tried looking it up on webmd.com and on Wikipedia, but I can't seem to find it.

Let's hope it doesn't spread... a plague like that could wipe out the vampire population.

It sounds like maybe she had a rare blood type, not a rare blood disorder, and her half-sister had the same blood type.It is possible for most people to have immune responses to blood that does not match their own. People with type AB blood can receive nearly every type of blood donated to them; all that matters is whether they are AB+ or AB-. People with type O blood, on the other hand, can only receive type O blood. It is further complicated depending on whether the person is O+ or O-.It's not a disease. The body just usually attacks blood that isn't of a compatible type. It views it as foreign matter.

You are probably referring to a rare blood type and not a blood disorder. The rarest blood type is called"Bombay". Bombay blood people have antibodies to all blood types"A, B, AB&O"which means they are only compatible with other Bombay blood types.
