Default May ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) be considered an Aids Symptom? - 12-12-2008, 06:00 PM

Given Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis manifests itself as an Auto-immune disease like most Aids manifestations, I am wondering whether someone with that disease resulting HIV positive may be considered as affected by Aids.Actually little is known about the way the motor neurons in ALS are destroyed; personally I would not see how to exclude that to be the effect of an auto-immune reaction like it is generally thought of Multiple Sclerosis. As for Aids, be it the effect of Hiv or of some other unknown cause, the general trend is also antibodies going wild.

ALS and HIV/AIDS are nothing alike and your question is based on a false premise. Neither ALS or HIV/AIDS is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune refers to an organisms failure to recognize one of its own constituent parts. ALS is a neurodegenerative disorder that destroys the motor neurons that control voluntary muscle movement.HIV is a retrovirus that attacks the immune system but that does not make it an auto-immune diseaseALS does not destroy the immune system like HIV.
