Default What types/breeds of dogs or cats would be the best option for someone with allergies - 02-21-2010, 11:49 PM

I am currently looking to see if there are any options out there for an allergy and asthma sufferer to own a pet relatively symptom-free. What breeds/types of cats or dogs are the best choice/least problematic?

Now that my boyfriend (the one with allergies/asthma) and I are finished with college, we are hoping to find a breed of cat or dog that we can have that won't cause problems for him. Any ideas?

You could get a hairless cat. If you want a dog, you can get a poodle or Yorkie. They do not have fur, but hair like you and me.

The ones you find in the stuffed toy section at Wal-mart.

Seriously, there is no such a thing as an hypoallergenic pet. Anyone that says there is are just lying to you.

I know, wrong answer but at least an honest answer,

I have asthma and i have 5 cats...just your garden variety pound cats and a Himalayan mix. I also have a chihuahua mix also from the pound. He sleeps with me under the covers every night....as long as I remember to do my symbiont each morning and night I am fine.

most cases not hair but dead skin causes allergy. hair does not matter. check and specify his cause so that u can chose cat or dog or another.

Alot of times its the oils from the animal not necessarily the fur.So even a hairless cat could bother your' allergies.
