How many is "so many?"

I suspect that there is simply more awareness of these allergies today than there once was.

Perception frequently overcomes facts.

Nut and peanut allergies maybe getting more common in children, doubling over the past five years in the United States, researchers reported on Tuesday.

Canadian researchers said they were seeing many more cases of peanut allergy than expected, too.

Two reports published in the December issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology suggest that peanut and tree nut allergies, which can be deadly, will continue to become more common. This is bad news for such children as peanut products are found in a wide range of food and other products.

I think we test for it more and then are told to keep the nuts away from the kids. This may be the wrong thing to do. Researchers at Duke are trying desensitization as a cure. See: (it isn't a great reference but...)

Not scientific but I'm in Japan and my son has peanut allergy. I asked a Japanese day care provider if the Japanese kids she takes care of have peanut allergy and she said not one. However, a good percent of her American kids had some sort of allergy. I suspect that the Japanese kids get desensitized naturally and American kids get so sheltered that their body reacts violently to the allergen.
