Default Early AM heartburn using Wedge Pillow, advice sought - 03-28-2013, 05:47 PM

I have very mild heartburn, went through 40 mg. Prilosec seven months ago for 3 mos. and it went away. I don't trust the gastro Dr. (as in, "scoping for dollars") but it has returned so I began 20 mg. Prilosec the last few weeks, bought a second Wedge Pillow, take ACV, very good diet, lost 25 lbs. over 9 mos, exercise. I don't do well with stress (see a therapist) but I'm at a loss to understand why early AM, even with two pillows on a Queen sized bed, I'm getting this mild heartburn which I have to get up for. I have excellent days and "growling" days. Any advice, greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It looks to me that you've done all the right things: very good diet and very disciplined with exercising. Loosing the weight is a sign that the steps you;ve taken have had a significant effect on your health.

Im not sure whether this applies to you or not and you may already know this, but alcohol in evenings can be unhelpful for reflux. I used to enjoy a glass of Merlot after my meals, but found i was experiencing reflux because of it. I learned that the wine was stimulating acid secretion in my stomache and then annoying me afterwards.

Another thing that ive been doing is drinking alkaline ionized water. Lots of it. I never used to drink enough water an was continually dehydrated. This water is pH 9.5 and im drinking around 3 liters a day. Im feeling great now. I only used to drink when i was thirsty but have learned that by that time my body is already dehydrated. Again you may already be drinking plenty of water, but i found that this really helped me.

Don't stop searching for your answer, your determination will win!

I realized in Weight Watchers last summer that my one Belgian beer, 1/2 other beer and one hard pretzel was a whopping 1/3 of my points allowance, so I stopped just about completely; the Belgians are typically up to 9 points alone.

I sleep (alone) on a Queen size bed and added a 2nd wedge pillow so they were side by side, which did nothing. Last night, I added a second soft pillow, two piled high, and got an amazing sleep.

I know I should see a gastro Dr. but I'd like to go in feeling better instead of frightened of them.

Great to hear you had better sleep. Hoping this keeps up for you.

I highly recommend you check out this forum: Alkaline Diet • Index page. It provides useful information on Alkaline Diet and even recipes. People suffering from many health issues have found great relief and improvement by adjusting their diet and focusing on foods that reduce acidity in the body. To those that would say the stomach is meant to be acidic and that alkaline diet is nonsense - i would say that yes, the stomach does need to be acidic to aid digestion and kill bacteria, and that no - alkaline diet does help the body function in the way that it was designed. There is nothing like experiencing it for yourself though.

Also, Alkaline water can rapidly change the conditions in the body and help the body become restored to its original intended condition: an alkaline pH.

This testimony came from someone who suffered from Barretts, and found relief from it by drinking ionized alkaline water:

----
In 2006 Mike had cancer of the espoghaus and surgery to remove the cancer was called an esophageal gastroectomy which removed 4 inches of his esophagus and 2/3 of his stomach. No chemo or radiation. Endoscopy procedures through the years would show a condition called Barretts Espohagus which according to PUBMED is a serious complication of GERD, which stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. In Barrett's esophagus, normal tissue lining the esophagus -- the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach -- changes to tissue that resembles the lining of the intestine. About 10%-15% of people with chronic symptoms of GERD develop Barrett's esophagus.

Barrett's esophagus does not have any specific symptoms. Patients with Barrett's esophagus may have symptoms related to GERD. It does, though, increase the risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma, which is a serious, potentially fatal cancer of the esophagus. Although the risk of this cancer is higher in people with Barrett's esophagus, the disease is still rare. Less than 1% of the people with Barrett's esophagus develop this particular cancer. Nevertheless, if you've been diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus, it's important to have routine examinations of your esophagus. With routine examination, your doctor can discover precancerous and cancer cells early, before they spread and when the disease is easier to treat.

We received our SD501 June 19, 2023 and Mike has been drinking Kangen water since that time. He just recently had another endoscopy and guess what the findings were???????????? He has a healthy esophagus and NO EVIDENCE OF BARRETTS ESOPHAGUS!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, the colonoscopy came back healthy too!!! Our family has been so blessed with Kangen water in so many ways but this one really is an eye opener. Thank you Mr. Oshiro!!!!

------
Its definitely worth checking out!
I used to suffer badly from Acid reflux myself, and now do not suffer from it at all since drinking the same water that Mike in the above testimony, talks about.

If you are having some good days and some bad days it leads me to believe there is a trigger in the food you are eating that you are missing? How sure are you that you've cut out all of the foods that trigger acid reflux? Have you tried keeping a food diary? That may allow you to find an odd trigger not usually associated with reflux (for my mother it was Calcium supplements of all things!).

On a related note, I found the wedge pillows hurt my back and instead propped up the head of my bed 7". since you noted living alone this may be a better long term strategy.

Good Luck!
