Default Any tips for infant with acid reflux? - 06-12-2009, 12:09 AM

Im the father of a 9 week old newborn. He has been diagnosed with acid reflux. We have tried every type of formula, Zantac, and now Prevacid, and nothing seems to help. We sleep him upright at night, and if anything things have gotten worse because he is now eating a bit more. He is fine, but an hour after he eats, he starts getting a gurgle sound. While he doesn't spit up, he begins to scream and sometimes burps again..this makes him scream even more. At night, he sleeps, but flails around constantly due to that mean old gurgle.
The pediatricians told us to wait it out. Im not sure if that is an option and I have heard severe acid reflux could cause asthma later on. If anyone has any tips I would appreciate them. I'm also thinking of taking my child to a gastroenteritis doc as well.

If little tips (like changing formula or sitting him upright) don't help, then it times to get a prescription from the doctor for his acid reflux. My daughter also had acid reflux and once we started giving her medical, everything helped better.

Have you had him checked for pyloric steno sis? If he has not had an ultrasound to rule this out DEMAND one! It is one thing to have a "happy" spotter but unhappy crying babies due to reflux is not OK...He could have pyloric steno sis (most common in 1st born boys). The ultrasound is non evasive and can give you piece of mind...or it could be a blockage, etc...My little boy is 5 months old, on Zaneta and still spits up (ALOT some days)...but he is a happy spotter..some time its projectile!! But I made sure we checked EVERYTHING...For me it doesn't matter if he sits up after eating or not...but I still have to only feed him 4 oz at a time or one breast at a feeding or we have way more spit up...makes for a lot of feedings but it means a happier and cleaner baby (and momma!). Best of luck to you..do NOT "wait it out", your son should not be suffering..it could be the formula or if breastfeeding an intolerance to dairy from momma...If need be change pediatricians and/or go to the pediatric Castro!

my son had it so bad that it was like flying across the room. he never could keep a bottle down. they gave me medication it didn't work. than they recommended rice cereal. it kinda worked but still was bad. than i talked to another doctor. she switched him to good start protect plus. it helped out and recommended Luke warm water. the hotter the water the worst it is. a personal opinion be careful sleeping your baby upright. i let my son sleep in his swing and he has a flat head now.. but they choke so ea sly that I'm more happy with a flat head than my son dine.

BTW he stopped at about 8 months.

Try Smaller, More Frequent Feedings
Feedings every two to three hours when the infant is awake will reduce the occurrence of gastric reflux. Overfeeding can increase abdominal pressure, which can lead to gastric reflux.

Rice Cereal May Help
This can reduce the amount an infant will regurgitate. Start with one teaspoon of rice cereal to each ounce of formula. If the baby is breast-feed, try pumping and then adding rice cereal to the breast milk.

Hope this helps it has helped my 4 month old a ton!!!

Default acid reflux in babies - 07-25-2012, 09:30 AM

It's quite common in infants to have reflux in their early life since the digestive system is still immature. After birth, the alimentary canal of the baby still have to get used to its functions since during the course of pregnancy, the nutrition and food is exchanged directly from the blood of the mother. That is the reason why babies up to three months old may expunge ingested foods.

For acid reflux remedies in babies, there are medications in the form of syrup that can be administered in order to eliminate the colicky pain that the baby may experience. A consultation with a physician is also necessary before the administration of antibiotics. In case there is an infection and antibiotics fail to cure it, further testing should be conducted in order to determine the baby’s condition and to administer the most suitable treatment.

If the baby is breastfed, it is also necessary for the mom to be mindful of her diet, as the foods that you consume can also affect your child’s condition or trigger the development of acid reflux disease in your baby. When putting your child to sleep, make sure that you avoid putting tight clothes to him/her to avoid adding pressure to your baby’s stomach. It is also necessary to position your child in a way that his/her head is higher that his/her stomach to prevent reflux.
