Default For mommies with acid reflux babies? - 08-27-2009, 09:31 PM

my baby is 3 month, never had any tests done, her peed just assumed she she has reflux by her symptoms put her on Zaneta nothing really changed drastically in turn es off crying and fussing.but she stopped spitting up at all...i took her off Zaneta and she was doing great no spit ups until i had to start supplementing with formula, now she's very gassy, spit up and fuss.I've tried Goodstart gentle, earth best and baby's only regular formulas.i was just wondering should i put her back on Zaneta or keep trying to find good formula, doctor says i just have to put her on soy formula but i read bad review about soy formulas///
i am mix feeding,

my 5 month old baby has reflux (he an upper GI done to prove it) anyways he is currently on Zaneta and it works wonders. he still spits up but nothing compared to what he did before hand. he is on gent lease right now but even when he was breastfed he still spit up bad. i just put the dose that his peed recommended twice a day in his bottle so i dint have to do it separate BC he dint like the taste of it.

Both of my babies had reflux and allergies and I know how difficult it can be trying to figure out what works and what doesn't!

Most dairy-based infant formulas are created the same, so if one doesn't work, odds are none of them will. Unfortunately, food allergies can often look a lot like reflux and I'm sure that's why your Dr. wants you to give soy a try. If you do decide to try cutting dairy make sure you also stop eating dairy as long as you are breastfeeding.

If you didn't notice an improvement with Zantac, I'd hold off on taking it and cut dairy instead. If you see a difference, you'll know it's problem with dairy not acid reflux. If you don't, you at least know it's the reflux you need to be addressing.

NO SOY!!! Soy contains a LOT of estrogen (1 day of formula is equal to 5 birth control pills). It's also linked to cancer.

Try a spoonful of pureed sweet potatoes after each meal. It's much healthier, and natural, than any of the drugs or rice crap that people recommend and it really works well.

It is VERY hard to diagnose reflux without invasive testing. So doing a drug trail (Zantac or Prevacid) is usually what most Dr. will do. But I want to be clear that Zantic will not stop a baby from spitting up. These drugs just lower the pH (acidity) or the spit up. So you shouldn't see ANY change in terms of spit up when you are taking medication.

50% of babies with reflux have a milk intolerance. Formula has milk in it unless you buy the soy type. The only issue I know of with soy formula is that most babies HATE the taste and it can be very difficult for them to take a bottle of it. Further if your baby was previously exclusively breast-fed, you SHOULD expect to see more gauziness and spit up with a bottle. Babies ingest more air with bottles - its unavoidable.

Its not clear to me why you had to start supplementation. Did your Dr suggest this? Is there a weight gain issue? If the reflux is THAT sever, I would encourage you to see a GI specialist. Also for severe reflux, you might want to try a stronger drug (usually Prevacid). Also your Zantac trial may not have been conclusive as typically pediatricians start with a very low dose so, if you really think reflux is the culprit, I would try a higher dose or different drug before giving up entirely.

My daughter had terrible reflux. I would breast feed 40 minutes to an hour and then the moment I took her off the breast she would spit up what looked to be like 4 ounces of breast milk. It was awful. Have you tried the Enfamil A.R.? It's designed for babies with reflux and I used to supplement with that and it helped but didn't entirely get rid of the problem. Reflux can be annoying but it doesn't bother babies as much as we think it does. The best new is it starts to go away between 5 and 6 Mont's. My daughter is 8 months old now and she hasn't spit up more than 5 times since she was 6 months old. Good luck.
