Default Infant acid reflux? 8 wk old.? - 04-12-2009, 07:38 PM

My son is 8 weeks old today and recently he has started gagging occasionally, never during feeding, usually about an hour or so after. He has foamy spit bubbles and he doesn't necessarily spit up alto, but he always has wet burps. He has only ever thrown up twice.

He doesn't cry out of pain when he eats but at 8 weeks old, he still does not consistently eat an entire 4 oz bottle. On occasion he'll eat the entire bottle, but more often than not, he'll only eat 2 ounces before he refuses more. Last night he ate an ounce and refused more and still slept a solid 5 hours, but during the rest of the day he'll want to eat more often.. about every 2 - 2.5 hours. If we make it to 3 hours, it's a miracle.

He is on Similac Advance formula and according to the pediatrician and the last time he was measured and weighed, he's gained almost 4 lbs since birth and right on target. We do have an appointment for his 2 month shots tomorrow and I'll ask the doc about the acid reflux but I was wondering if anyone else experienced something similar to this as far as symptoms?

Sounds like a normal baby to me - even sounds like an easy baby.

My nephew had acid reflux, and he would honestly projectile puke ENTIRE bottles, all day, every day. And he would cry all ll day long from gas pain.

My 12 week old has had reflux from day one. She spits up constantly, she actually throws most of her bottles back up. She's been on Zantac since 8 weeks and she gets rice cereal in every other bottle to help keep the formula down. She's always gained weight and is thriving, so we just have to wait it out and try to make her as comfortable as possible. It really doesn't sound like he has reflux to me, but I'm not a doctor. My daughter does the same thing with feedings. During the day she will want to eat every 2 or 3 hours, but she will sleep a good 8 hours at night without waking up to eat. As for the foamy spit bubbles, it's probably just drool? If you're really worried, talk to your doctor about it.
Btw...congratulations!!

I don't think your baby has acid reflux. My son is 8 month's & he has it. Many baby's with acid reflux tend to want to eat alto more & more often to help with the pain. Also they cry all the time like they have colic because having reflux is painful for baby's. As long as you don't think the baby is experiencing any pain or eating more often then I wouldn't stress myself but it wouldn't hurt to ask his doctor either.

Hi there. My 5 week old son has acid reflux. He vomits alto, often it looks like most of what he has eaten. Often it doesn't happen until up to an hour after he feeds. He also brings up clear liquid and very diluted milk. He also gets severe hiccups where a mouthful of milk will come up with each hiccup. Despite this he is gaining plenty of weight and is very happy, but there are definitely times that he is in distress with it. I can hear liquid gurgling up into his throat and he coughs and splutters, gags and grimaces. Im assuming this is the acid burning his throat. Also sometimes his voice sounds hoarse when he crays. He is breastfed and feeds very often but not for very long and when he does occasionally get a bottle of formula he rarely takes more than 1/2 ounces in one go.

I described all this to my health visitor today and she said it is acid reflux. She said the two defining symptoms Arneb bringing up milk so long after the feed and bringing up clear fluid. So the gagging an hour after feeding and foamy spit you experience with your little one sound like it definitely could be acid reflux.

Health visitor told me I should ask the doctor for infant Gascony to neutralize the acid.

Good luck, hope you get sorted.

reflux is when the second part which is attached to the stomach at the bottom of the esophagus doesn't close fully, letting the acid in the stomach come up causing the gag reflex. Zantac is what i take ever since i was 2 i am not joking i still have it but only when doing sport (i have a flap that doesn't stay closed, your baby must have that too)

give him a Zaneta and feed him. The Zaneta can be obtained in a chemist but as we all know ask your doctor before changing medication
